Assignment 3: Huffpost VS Google News

The Huffington Post is a better option than Google News, it is more reliable, is a private company and its main purpose is to inform unlike Google News which is known for being an advertising company. You cannot rely on a marketing company when it comes to news and becoming informed. Google News lets you read from different sources on the web all the news or just those news subjects that interest you, and this could be a great thing on their favor but The Huffington Post is more like an old school newspaper with a more human and news passionate staff.

One of the greatest advantages of Google News for some people is the high number of results you get with a search but is this really an advantage? Think of this as being hungry, wanting to eat healthy and going to a buffet, everything you see that’s available for you to eat will satisfy your hunger but not everything will be healthy for you. Sometimes less is better especially when it comes to news sources; I rather have a few reliable sources than thousands of different opinions on a topic. Google News crawls thousands of sources and applies a not always too clever algorithm using many parameters. Google News lacks the human editing layer and is not very useful. With the no so good help of the algorithms, Google News lacks precision and selectiveness. I can’t help but think of Google News as a computer telling me the news, literally, and this is not how I want to be informed.Google News needs to add more human editing.

The Huffington Post I believe is a one of the smartest news site out there, as Frederic Filloux stated on a an article, The Huffington Post is “the mother of all news internet impostures” (http://www.mondaynote.com/2010/09/19/aggregators-the-good-ones-vs-the-looters/) . The number of user for The Huffington Post has being increasing since 2010, mainly for the good content and reliable sources found on their articles, with almost as many users as the NYTimes.com. The fact that the Huffington Post is a private Held company is also a pro. The Huffington Post is a more traditional news site with old school practices and this makes it a more trustworthy site. The Huffington Post is by far a much more verified news source, their articles inspire confidence. The site is easy to use and there’s always a quick access to the information the visitor is interested in. There are easy navigable sections full of interesting topics, definitely one of the best sites to learn current news.

Google News is investing in technology but this could be a dangerous mistake, they should be investing on human resources to become a most trusted site for news, comparing Google News to The Huffington Post is not fair, Yahoo News would be a much more descent opponent for The Huffington Post. I’m sure there are brilliant people working for Google in general but the should invest to try to match The Huffington Post peoples’ talent.
